World First Aid Day – September 13th 2025

Raising Awareness in Perth

Each year, World First Aid Day raises awareness about the importance of lifesaving skills. It’s a global reminder that small actions, from knowing how to apply a bandage correctly to performing CPR, can mean the difference between life and death.

For Perth families, schools, and workplaces, this day is particularly relevant. Accidents and medical emergencies don’t follow a schedule, and being prepared is the key to protecting loved ones, colleagues, and neighbours. Need to refresh your skills? Take the World First Aid Day online quiz to test your first aid knowledge.

About World First Aid Day

World First Aid Day is recognised on the second Saturday of September each year and was introduced by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The goal is simple but powerful: to raise awareness of how essential first aid is, and to encourage more people to become trained in these lifesaving skills.

Today, over 100 countries take part, running public awareness campaigns, training sessions, and community events. In Australia, organisations highlight the role first aid plays in keeping households and workplaces safe, especially in regions like Western Australia where people often spend time outdoors or in remote areas where medical help isn’t immediately available.

Why It Matters

Emergencies can happen anywhere – on a building site, at a sporting match, in the classroom, or at home. In Australia, around 30,000 people experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year, and survival rates are doubled when bystanders provide CPR before emergency services arrive.

Beyond cardiac arrest, everyday accidents like burns, sprains, cuts, or allergic reactions can escalate quickly if not treated correctly. In fact, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that falls are one of the leading causes of injury-related hospitalisations, many of which could be managed more effectively with basic first aid knowledge.

For workplaces, having trained staff is more than a legal responsibility, it’s a cultural investment in safety. A team that feels prepared to handle emergencies works with greater confidence, knowing they can look after each other if something goes wrong.

Training That Makes a Difference

Awareness is the first step, but real change comes with training. At Bestwest Care, we deliver the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course, designed to give people practical skills they can use in real-life situations. This course covers:

  • Performing CPR on adults, children, and infants.
  • Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Managing bleeding, burns, and fractures.
  • Recognising and treating asthma and anaphylaxis.
  • Responding to seizures, shock, and other sudden medical conditions.

Training sessions are hands-on, with scenarios that mirror real-life emergencies. By practising these skills, participants build confidence to act quickly and effectively, whether at home, work, or in the community.
