Course Overview

Medication Essentials for Support Workers is a non-accredited short course designed for anyone who helps clients manage their medication as part of a care role. Whether you work in aged care, disability support, home care or community services, it gives you a clear, practical grounding in how to assist with medication safely, respectfully and within your scope as a support worker.

It’s an ideal option if you want to refresh your knowledge, build confidence before stepping into a new role, or understand the fundamentals without committing to a full accredited qualification. Because it’s available online, you can start whenever you’re ready and learn at a pace that suits your work and life.

How It’s Delivered

Choose the option that works best for you:

  • Online (individual study) – Enrol and start anytime, from anywhere in WA. Work through the course from home or your workplace at your own pace, with no travel required.
  • In-person (group bookings) – Available for groups of 10 or more, delivered either at your workplace (subject to suitable facilities) or at our Kwinana training rooms by one of our expert nurse trainers.

On successful completion you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion. Please note this is a non-accredited course and does not result in a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

If you need a nationally recognised qualification – for example, to meet an employer requirement or earn credit toward further study – the accredited HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications unit may suit you better. Our team is happy to help you choose the right fit.

Training Location

In-person group sessions can be held at your workplace or Bestwest Care Training Rooms Unit 8 / 40 Meares Ave, Kwinana, Western Australia – close to bus and train public transport, and convenient for teams across Kwinana, Rockingham and the wider Peel region.

Dates & Times

Online: Enrol and start at any time – there are no fixed class dates.
In-person: Offered only via group bookings of 10+ attendees, scheduled to suit your team. Contact us to arrange a date.

Group & Workplace Bookings

Training a whole team? We can bring this course to your workplace. Group bookings (minimum 10 attendees) can be delivered on-site where suitable facilities are available, or at our Kwinana training rooms, with group discounts available – a cost-effective way to give your staff consistent, up-to-date medication knowledge.

What You’ll Learn:

By the end of the course, you’ll have a practical understanding of how to support clients with their medication safely and appropriately. Topics include:

  • The role and responsibilities of a support worker when assisting with medication
  • Common types and forms of medication, and how they’re commonly administered
  • Safe handling, storage and the importance of following instructions
  • Understanding the principles of medication self-administration
  • Recognising and responding to issues, side effects or errors
  • Accurate documentation and reporting
  • Understanding your scope and when to escalate to a supervisor or health professional
  • Respecting client dignity, privacy and choice

There are no prerequisites for this course, it’s open to everyone. Whether you’re new to the care industry or looking to refresh your skills, this training is suitable for individuals from all industries and experience levels.

Looking for the Accredited Version?

If you need a nationally recognised qualification, our accredited HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications unit delivers a formal Statement of Attainment and can also count as an elective toward the CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support.

Our Medication Essentials for Support Workers course is a non-accredited short course, designed to deliver practical, real-world skills.

This course is appropriate for all industries and community groups, including education, healthcare, construction, hospitality, and more. This course can be conducted at individual workplaces or venues with our experienced trainers, subject to venue suitability.

Is this course accredited?

No. Medication Essentials for Support Workers is a non-accredited course, designed as an awareness and skills booster rather than a formal qualification. You’ll receive a Certificate of Completion. If you need a nationally recognised credential, see our accredited HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications (Medication Competency).

Do I need any prior experience or qualifications to do this course?

No prerequisites are required. The course suits both newcomers and experienced workers wanting a refresher.

How long does it take?

The online medication course is self-paced, so you can fit it around your schedule.  Or one day in-person group training.

Will this qualify me to administer medication?

This course builds your awareness and practical understanding of assisting clients with medication. Your specific duties always depend on your employer’s policies and your role. For a formal qualification, the accredited HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications unit of competency (Medication Competency) is the better pathway.
