HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications Overview
HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications course is a nationally accredited unit of competency (also known as Medication Competency), providing you with the skills and knowledge to assist clients with their medication in a safe and supportive manner. This course is nationally recognised throughout Australia.
It is recommended anyone interested in completing the full accredited competency to contact Bestwest Care to discuss the course requirements in more detail.
Medication Administration vs Medication Competency
Searching for medication administration training in Perth? “Medication competency” and “medication administration” describe the same skill set. This course, HLTHPS006 Assist Clients With Medications, leads to the same nationally recognised Statement of Attainment whether you’re looking for a medication administration certificate or a medication competency certificate – some employers and job ads use one term, others use the other, but they’re asking for the same accredited unit.
Whichever term brought you here, this medication administration course gives you the same result – a single medication management course that covers assisting clients with their medication safely, regardless of which phrase your workplace uses for it. This is a fee-for-service short course rather than one of WA’s fee-free qualifications – see our fee-free courses page for what’s currently funded at no cost.
What this course gives you
HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications is a nationally accredited unit of competency. On successful completion you receive a Statement of Attainment recognised across Australia – ideal where an employer or qualification requires formal, accredited evidence of competency.
This medication administration training covers six practical skills you’ll use on the job:
- Safe medication administration – following your workplace’s procedures for giving or assisting with medication correctly and safely.
- The five rights of medication administration – checking that the right medication is given at the right time, to the right person, in the right amount, via the right route, the exact safety check written into the official HLTHPS006 unit of competency you’ll be assessed against, and a widely-used clinical safety concept more broadly (IHI).
- How you’re assessed – across the five elements of the official unit: preparing to assist with medication, preparing the client, supporting them through administration, handling contingencies (like a missed dose or an adverse reaction), and completing documentation. You’ll need to demonstrate these in a real or simulated work environment, not just answer questions about them.
- Documentation – accurately recording what was given, when, and any observations, so the client’s medication record stays complete and legally sound.
- Storage and handling – keeping medications secure, correctly stored, and accounted for in a residential or community setting.
- Recognising adverse reactions – spotting the early signs of a reaction or side effect and knowing when and how to escalate.
- Scope of a support worker – understanding exactly what you’re authorised to do under this unit, and when to refer to a nurse or medical professional.

Who Recognises This Qualification?
HLTHPS006 Assist Clients With Medications is a nationally recognised unit of competency, so the Statement of Attainment you receive is accepted by employers Australia-wide, not just in WA. It’s commonly required or preferred by aged care providers, disability service organisations, and NDIS-registered providers wherever staff assist clients with medication as part of their role.
If your employer has asked for formal, accredited evidence of medication competency – rather than an informal or in-house induction – this unit of competency is exactly that.
As an Elective Unit
HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications course is offered as a stand-alone course/unit or as an elective unit for our Certificate IV in Ageing Support, and is an accredited course where upon completion a Statement of Attainment will be issued.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Already administering or assisting with medication in your current role, and just need the formal paperwork? Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets you demonstrate your existing skills and knowledge against the HLTHPS006 unit requirements, which may mean you don’t need to complete the full day of training.
The process usually involves:
- An initial conversation with our enrolment team about your current role and experience
- Submitting evidence, such as a position description, employer reference, or a record of medication-related duties you already perform
- A skills assessment against the HLTHPS006 unit requirements
- Gap training for any part your evidence doesn’t fully cover
Contact our enrolment team to find out if RPL could apply to your Assist Clients With Medications application. If you’re weighing this up against Certificate III in Individual Support or another full qualification, our enrolment team can talk you through both options, including First Aid if you’re building a broader compliance skill set.
