While there is no formal certification or accreditation required to begin working in the disability sector, individual service providers may have a set of basic requirements to start work.
This course is one of Bestwest Care’s non‑accredited short courses, designed to equip you with the essential foundation skills and knowledge to start in disability care work. This course is a recommended first step, as it provides the fundamentals along with nationally recognised certification in key areas.
Upon completion, you will receive:
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid Statement of Attainment, for the Accredited Unit of Competency
- Assist Client with Medications (Skill Booster/Refresher) – Certificate of Participation
- Manual Handling – Certificate of Participation
- Provide Support with Dysphagia Management – Certificate of Participation
- Introduction to Disability – Certificate of Participation

This includes 3 days of face-to-face classes, in person at Bestwest Care Training Rooms. Plus online and virtual work at home.
Course Overview:
Bestwest Care’s Introduction to Disability course provides you with the essential, foundational skills and knowledge required to work as a Disability Support worker in the community. Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate of Participation for Introduction to Disability, plus two accredited unit of competency certificates including HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medications.

Enrolment Requirements:
As this course includes nationally recognised units, you will need a basic level of physical competency to meet the necessary performance level required. This means you need to be able to perform CPR on an adult and infant manikin placed on the floor for a period of two minutes and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life.
You are not required to have any prior medical training before enrolling in this course and it is appropriate for both first-time learners and as a refresher course.
As an Elective Unit
The Intro to Disability short course is designed to equip you with the basic essentials to work in disability care work. It is aimed at Care Workers and is strongly recommended for all staff providing personal care.
The course includes a bundle of short courses which can also be completed in isolation if required.
